Stick insects are among the most extraordinary yet often overlooked animals that can be kept at home. Their subtle appearance, resembling twigs or leaves, is the result of remarkable adaptations that help them survive in their natural habitats. Although they are relatively easy to care for, a properly designed terrarium is essential for ensuring their health and longevity. Here, I’ll show you how to create the ideal environment for stick insects, from choosing the right enclosure and setting it up to providing proper everyday care. Whether you are just starting your journey with these fascinating insects or want to improve the conditions for your current pets, you will find practical tips and proven solutions here.

The shape of stick insect terrarium

Stick insects need a tall terrarium. Unlike many other invertebrates, vertical space is much more important than floor space. This is because they need enough room to hang freely while molting. If the enclosure is too low, a stick insect may struggle to shed its exoskeleton properly, which can lead to deformities, becoming trapped in the old exoskeleton, or even death. As a general rule, the terrarium should be at least three times as tall as the body length of the stick insect. It should never be shorter than this, although providing additional height is always beneficial.

Which terrarium should you choose?

A stick insect terrarium does not necessarily have to be made of glass, although glass enclosures are usually the most visually appealing option. Many keepers successfully use plastic containers with additional ventilation as breeding enclosures. Some stick insect species can also be kept in mesh enclosures, but these require more frequent misting to maintain appropriate humidity levels.

Terrarium size for stick insects

Stick insects can usually be kept in groups, as the presence of other individuals does not generally cause stress. However, overcrowding should be avoided, as it may make molting more difficult and, in some species, can lead to individuals biting one another. The size of the enclosure should be selected based on the number of insects you plan to keep. Unfortunately, there are no universal dimensions for a group of stick insects, as requirements vary depending on the species and whether you intend to breed them and raise offspring. As a general guideline, each stick insect should have enough space to feed and molt without having to climb over other individuals. The more spacious the terrarium, the better.

Ventilation in a stick insect terrarium

The terrarium should provide good ventilation while still being secure enough to prevent newly hatched nymphs from escaping through small gaps. The best solution is gravity ventilation, with one ventilation panel placed near the top of the enclosure and another near the bottom. This setup encourages natural air circulation and helps reduce the risk of mold growth.

Many keepers adapt old aquariums or large jars into stick insect enclosures by adding a ventilated lid. While this solution can work, more sensitive species may not do well in such setups due to poor air circulation and a higher risk of mold development. In these cases, more frequent cleaning is necessary.

A secure enclosure is especially important if you keep young stick insects or plan to breed them. Newly hatched nymphs are extremely small and can easily escape through tiny openings, including gaps between sliding glass panels. For this reason, all potential escape routes should be carefully sealed.

Terrarium set up for stick insects

The interior of a stick insect terrarium does not need to be complicated, but it should be practical and functional. The most important elements are those that allow the insects to climb and move around comfortably. The terrarium should include:

  • twigs placed vertically or diagonally, they should reach the ceiling of the enclosure so that stick insects can use the entire available space,
  • food plants,
  • simple decorative elements, these are optional,
  • a substrate that helps maintain humidity and keeps the enclosure clean.

Stick insects spend most of their time motionless on plants and branches, which makes these the most important parts of the terrarium setup. The enclosure should not be overcrowded with decorations. The priorities are the insects’ safety during molting and easy maintenance for the keeper. Branches should be dry and free from resin. You can also skip this decorative element if you provide food plants in the form of leafy branches or shoots, as stick insects can also use these for molting.

Do not place a water dish in a stick insect terrarium. Since these insects cannot swim, even a small amount of water can pose a serious risk, especially to young nymphs. The moisture they obtain from their food is usually sufficient, and any additional water needs are met by drinking droplets from leaves and the terrarium walls after misting.

Substrate in a stick insect terrarium

The substrate in a stick insect terrarium is not as important as it is for some other animals, but it still serves several useful functions. It helps maintain humidity, makes cleaning easier, and can provide some cushioning in case of falls. The most commonly used substrates include: paper towels, coconut fiber (e.g., Tropical Bioterra), deacidified peat without chemical additives or specialized terrarium substrates designed for tropical species. For many beginners, paper towels are a very practical option because they are easy to replace and help keep the enclosure clean. They also make it easier to notice and remove eggs, which is particularly useful if you do not want to breed stick insects. For larger, more natural-looking setups, you can use natural substrates, but make sure they do not stay excessively wet, as high moisture levels can encourage mold growth.

Temperature – what should you keep in mind?

Most commonly kept stick insect species thrive at room temperature, usually around 20–26°C. In many homes, this means no additional heating is required. However, if a particular species needs higher temperatures or the temperature in your home regularly falls below 20°C, additional heating may be necessary. Temperature directly affects the insects’ metabolism. If it is too low, stick insects may grow more slowly and become less active, with reduced appetite.

Heating is usually provided during the day, especially in terrariums with lighting. This reflects natural conditions, where daytime temperatures are higher and nighttime temperatures are lower. If the nighttime temperature remains within the safe range for the species, additional heating is not needed. However, if it drops below the recommended minimum, heating should also be provided at night. To avoid manually switching heating devices on and off, you can use a timer. Simply connect it to a power outlet and set the hours during which it should supply power to the connected equipment.

Ways to heat a stick insect terrarium

  • Heating Mat – a heating mat is one of the simplest heating solutions. It can be plugged in and placed under the terrarium or attached to one of its walls. Most often, mats are placed underneath the enclosure, covering approximately one-third of the bottom surface. However, if you want to prevent eggs laid in the substrate from overheating or drying out (heated substrate dries much faster), it is better to place the mat on the lower side wall of the terrarium instead. Regardless of placement, the mat should always be installed on the outside of the enclosure. When attaching it to the side, you can add a layer of insulation, such as Styrofoam or a heat-reflective panel behind the mat to help direct warmth back into the terrarium. The best option is a heating mat with a thermostat, which allows you to precisely control the temperature and adjust it to the needs of your insects. A thermostat also provides additional protection by reducing the risk of overheating in case of a malfunction.
  • Heating Cable – a heating cable works in a similar way but requires more careful installation. It needs to be arranged and secured in place, which makes it less convenient to reposition. Its advantage is that it allows you to create different temperature zones within the terrarium. Areas where the cable is placed more densely will be warmer, while areas with less cable coverage will remain cooler. Heating cables are available with or without thermostats, but using an external thermostat is strongly recommended for safety reasons. In the event of a malfunction, a heating cable can reach temperatures above 100°C, potentially damaging materials around it, such as melting Styrofoam placed underneath. Safety should always be the priority.
  • Heating Lamps – heating lamps are another effective solution, but they require a suitable fixture for installation. They can be placed inside the terrarium only if the enclosure is tall enough to maintain a safe distance between the lamp and the insects. For smaller terrariums, external heating with a bulb may work well. A simple desk lamp fitted with a suitable screw-in heating bulb can be used for this purpose.
  • Ceramic Heaters – ceramic heaters are installed in a similar way to heating lamps. They do not produce light — they only emit heat.

Humidity in a stick insect terrarium

Air humidity is often even more important than temperature when it comes to keeping stick insects. These insects require a sufficiently humid environment, especially during molting. Conditions that are too dry can cause difficulties with shedding their exoskeleton properly. To maintain appropriate humidity levels, it is usually enough to prevent the substrate from drying out completely and to mist the terrarium regularly. In most cases, misting once a day is sufficient. A slightly moist substrate will gradually release moisture through evaporation, helping to maintain higher air humidity.

Additional misting of the terrarium decor, including branches, plants, and walls, can further increase humidity and help maintain stable conditions. The frequency of misting should be adjusted to the individual setup, as water evaporation depends on many factors, including air temperature, additional heating, the size and placement of ventilation openings, the type and thickness of the substrate, and the number of food plants inside the enclosure. Plants themselves release moisture through transpiration, which can contribute to higher humidity levels.

However, it is important not to overdo it. Excessively high humidity combined with insufficient airflow can encourage mold growth and create unsuitable conditions for the insects. It can also contribute to problems during molting.

Cleaning the terrarium

Regular cleaning is an important part of stick insect care, as these insects produce a considerable amount of waste and plant debris. While feeding, they often bite off pieces of leaves, which then fall onto the substrate and may begin to mold. Their droppings can also quickly become covered with mold in a humid environment. Depending on the conditions inside the terrarium, cleaning is usually needed every 3–7 days. Ideally, mold should be prevented before it has a chance to develop. Most stick insect species recommended for beginners can tolerate small amounts of mold, but excessive growth can negatively affect their health.

When cleaning, paper towel substrates can simply be replaced entirely. More natural substrates, such as coconut fiber, peat, or soil, require removing feces and plant remains from the surface. This can be done by gently scraping away the debris together with a small amount of substrate. Cleaning is often carried out when replacing or adding fresh food, but in some cases additional cleaning may be necessary between feedings.

If you plan to breed stick insects, always check the substrate and waste material for eggs before throwing anything away. Many species scatter their eggs across the substrate, and because the eggs are often similar in size and appearance to feces, they can easily be discarded by accident.

Common mistakes made by beginners

Although stick insects are relatively easy to keep, beginners often make a few common mistakes. The most frequent ones include:

  • a terrarium that is too low,
  • incorrect humidity levels,
  • a lack of suitable food plants,
  • insufficient ventilation,
  • handling the insects too frequently,
  • keeping them in an enclosure that is too small.

These mistakes do not always cause immediate health problems, but over time they can lead to increased mortality and difficulties with molting. Paying attention to the key aspects of stick insect care will help create a safe and stable environment where these fascinating insects can thrive.
